There was a time when only one foreign club was known. Manchester united. every one was a fan of it, even though they didn't know what it was or for that matter where it was. students and many youngsters thought it was 'cool' to be a Manchester United fan. It acted as a medium of conversation and punk-ship in india. avid fans like I, who really used to follow football and support Manchester whole heartedly by folowing the matches season after season felt good to see the support.
then came the time when ESPN-STAR brought airing rights of EPL. people started watching Epl by chance or to see what manU truly was. people started to see other clubs. and slowly but truly, supporting Man U had become passe. the then Manu fans, who i call 'no choice fans' started hating manU for some reason.
was it cool to do so or did they like lampard, we may never know. these are not the true fans.
so, have you ever wondered why it was Manchester united which was popular before any one watched it?
why wasn't it Chelsea?it is not just because of those innumerable titles(Liverpool had more) but the spirit, that was Manchester united. what we can infer is that Manchester is the club to follow. that is where, the true motive of writing this article lies. In an appeal to all those former 'no choice fans', Manchester is the true club to follow. what can be more stupid than supporting something to become passe

My 2 cents:
ReplyDeleteNew fans have a natural tendency to support whichever club is on top. It's no secret Man Utd destroyed everyone else in England in the 90s, while Barca and Real Madrid were dominant in Spain. It's no co-incidence, either, that those 3 were the most supported clubs in Asia.
Similarly, in the 80s Liverpool were all anyone talked about, because they were the best then.
I don't know how you can infer that Utd are the club to follow. Which club a person follows depends on chance, for instance someone who started following football in 2003 would be an Arsenal fan, because they were the most impressive then. From 2004 to 2006 it was Chelsea, then Manchester United again. It's a cycle.
It doesn't matter which club you support, as long as you stick with them.
your last line says it all.
ReplyDeletestick with the club, which was not what many people said.
i have not asked people to follow any club but to be loyal.
people wanted to be different and thus stopped liking manu, thats how it is in india.

Manasvi is the best example for this.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with you on this one.
